When to Save

Not every item in your closet needs to be hundreds of dollars for it to look good. In fact, it doesn’t make sense to spend a lot on certain items. The 9 items listed in the last post are the basic elements and you can pick and choose which items you feel deserve a bit more of an investment. These are some ideas to get you started.

T-Shirts: Tees are those pieces of clothing that will constantly rotate through your wardrobe. Repeated washing fades colors and breaks down the fibers making tees look old and more prone to getting holes. White shirts are more prone to tearing because the fabric weave is usually a bit looser. They are also much more easily stained from sweat and other brightly colored dangers. Just because you are saving, doesn’t mean you should sacrifice on quality. H&M has great basics that are good quality and come in a ton of colors and styles for less than or around $10.

Trendy Jewelry: Jewelry is one of those things that falls right in the middle on the splurge-save spectrum. Classic pieces that will never go out of style and can be worn no matter the occasion or your age should be something that you spend a bit more on. Costume jewelry or the most recent trends, like statement or bib necklaces, typically don’t last more than a season or two, therefore, you should probably look to save a couple bucks. Unless of course, you fall in love with a trend and want to make it part of your forever style. Its a no brainer to recommend forever21 for those trendy, low-cost pieces, but also take a look at Francesca’s Collection where you can find a fantastic range of classic and unique pieces.

Little Black Dress: While this might be a piece of clothing that you reach for a few times a month, don’t feel like this needs to be an expensive, luxury, super fancy dress. In fact, keeping it more simple and affordable gives you the opportunity spend money elsewhere to put the outfit together. Keeping the style simple, yet flattering, allows for more jewelry variety. The Loft has great styles that are daytime appropriate, while stores like H&M and Express have bit more of a night-time flair.

Flats:  A nice pair of heels are always fun to wear and can dress up an outfit, however, flats are much more practical if you happen to live in a commuter city, or are on your feet for a few hours a day. Fun details like prints, metal or jewels give an otherwise boring shoe a fresh updated look. With so many styles to choose from (ballet, loafer, and oxfords, just to name a few), you should be able to find one that easily fits the general look you are going for. It’s no secret to check out Marshall’s and TJMaxx for great discounts on higher end brands, but Target and Kohl’s also have a wide variety at a low price.
